JUVE Handbuch Wirtschaftskanzleien 2018/2019
In the current edition, JUVE's 30-person independent research team presents 782 law firms in 37 fields of law.
P+P is once again represented in all core practice areas with a total of 25 professionals, of which most are listed in more than one specialty. Seven partners are listed as "leading" advisors.
In addition, P+P was named "Law Firm of the Year 2018 for Succession/Private Clients/Trusts" with Reinhard Pöllath, Andreas Richter and Stephan Viskorf as "leading" advisors.
The team earned this coveted award through its market dominance in advising private clients on company succession, assets and trusts. In the primary legal practice areas related to advising private clients, such as tax and investment law, corporate/M&A and the international nexus, the firm is also "significantly further along than most of its competitors". An additional plus is the consistent development of associations with leading foreign firms regarding advice on Brexit matters, e.g. on immigration, the relocation of British charities or moving family offices to Germany. This accommodates the ever more multi-jurisdictional advice for large international families. At the same time, Martin Liebernickel joined the team in Frankfurt.
In addition, the firm has successfully executed a generational change: Andreas Richter and Stephan Viskorf "set the tone", Christoph Philipp and counsel such as Katharina Gollan "are already receiving a great deal of recognition in the market". The founder of the firm, Reinhard Pöllath ("exceptional, a very equalizing force in shareholder and family conflicts") and "veteran" Matthias Bruse "round out the advisory offering in an impressive manner" and, together with the younger generation of partners, create "an unbeatable combination". Wolfgang Grobecker is also one of the frequently recommended advisors; he is also listed as a "leading" advisor for corporate law and is recommended for his competence in corporate law disputes, along with Eva Nase.
Mr. Grobecker is one of the few advisors who has meanwhile advanced to being a "prominent player in the market" for shareholder advisory and he advises both corporations and hedge funds. Through this expansion, he and his colleague Eva Nase have succeeded in establishing a "diversified client portfolio". This was possible due to the fact that both Munich-based partners have a "high level of competence in stock corporation and corporate group law" and in the meantime they also advised on matters involving D&O liability for (ex-) executive board members. They are thereby one of the few advisory teams in the market that work for active shareholders.
Other frequently recommended advisors for corporate law are Michael Inhester and Matthias Bruse, who are both also lauded for their expertise in private equity transactions and M&A.
The transactional advisory for strategic investors at P+P has developed "rapidly". Partners Frank Thiäner and Jens Hörmann are responsible for this development by striving to create better relationships with other independent law firms in other countries for international mandates. The internationalization of the practice area is also demonstrated by increasing advice for hedge funds, who value an independent law firm, and in advice to established (foreign) corporate groups that have investments in German companies. In addition to those mentioned above, the frequently recommended M&A advisors include Philipp von Braunschweig, Otto Haberstock, Georg Greitemann and Andrea von Drygalski, who are all also recommended for their private equity expertise.
Mrs. von Drygalski is one of the major players in the private equity sector and is one of the "leading" advisors. P+P has a "record number of mid-cap PE deals" that make for a massive workload. Benedikt Hohaus "continues to dominate the legal market for management participation". P+P has thereby made the leap to the top-tier listing. P+P also made the listing with the highest score in venture capital, with Christian Tönies ("very cooperative and competent", "veteran of the scene") as a "leading" advisor. P+P has a noteworthy deal flow here too and scores with increasing advice in the FinTech sector, which is promising and requires intensive advice. Together with his colleague Michael Inhester, he also increasingly advises corporate VC clients.
In the private equity sector, P+P also has an "excellent reputation" in fund structuring. "Almost no competitor can hold a candle" [to P+P's] practice group in advising private equity firms. Representatives of this team include Uwe Bärenz ("outstanding, pragmatic advice") and Amos Veith as "the most prominent player in the German fund sector". In addition, clients also trust Andreas Rodin ("we rely on him completely"). They emphasize the fact that P+P professionals "are among the primary advisors" for funds. The success of the firm also manifests itself in the promotion of Tarek Mardini to partner.
Within the firm, the interconnection of the fund structuring practice with the real estate law practice functions on the basis of the competence of the real estate team, which can advise on all forms of transactions, including fund structuring. Additional strengths include advice on financing and project development. The entire team is "very good and capable". Stefan Lebek is one of the "leading" advisors in the market and receives great praise ("a super attorney, personable and professionally excellent"). Carsten Führling and Matthias Durst are also among the frequently recommended advisors.
