JUVE Handbuch Steuern 2019
The current issue of “JUVE Handbuch Steuern” (Handbook Tax Law) 2019 aims to provide comprehensive and qualified coverage of the services offered by nearly 150 tax consulting firms. The editorial team, consisting of 36 independent journalists, conducted nearly 5,500 interviews with consultants, clients and authorities and evaluated standardized questionnaires from the consultants.
P+P Pöllath + Partners is represented in the areas of finance-, corporate group-, transaction- and private client-related tax law with a total of 13 professionals, some of them in several practice areas and four partners are listed as "leading" consultants.
"Leading" advisors for finance tax law are Frankfurt partner Andreas Rodin ("a God, he is the first who advised on contract, supervision and tax law altogether") and Berlin partner Amos Veith. Even competitors consider P+P the "most important law firm in Germany for setting up and structuring closed-end funds". The firm is considered the "number one" especially for "small and mid-cap funds up to 100 million euros". Above all, P+P owes this market position to the fact that "since its founding some 20 years ago, it has always provided comprehensive advice at the interfaces between tax, corporate and supervisory law and, for a long time, has also advised on declarations". In addition, the law firm "is one of the market-leading financial tax consultants, not least because of its deep roots in alternative investments". With the appointment of Sebastian Käpplinger, P+P has also managed to "establish a large number of very recognized partners in all generations". Other frequently recommended advisors apart from Andreas Rodin and Amos Veith are Uwe Bärenz, Jens Steinmuller, Ronald Buge ("speaks plain text and not just consultant-speak, you can work very well with his advice and references", client), as well as Michael Best.
Also in the area of transaction tax, Michael Best, in company with Hardy Fischer, is among the "frequently recommended" consultants. The firm's focus is tax contract structuring and structuring of M&A, PE and real estate transactions. The law firm is considered to be an "established market player" in these areas, and in particular for mid-cap PE deals, the "tax practice is so firmly anchored that its competitors are barely outranking it". The law firm rarely has to take part in tenders, as merely the recommendations of clients suffice to "drive mandates into the pipeline".
The group tax team was able to position itself in classic corporate tax law and international issues with the "frequently recommended" Frankfurt partner Pia Dorfmueller. This is particularly due to the synergies with the "excellent position of the law firm in the succession consultancy", whose representative partner Stephan Viskorf is seen as an "extremely competent consultant" in this area, as well as for his expertise in the area of high net worth private clients. Competitors also attest to his "excellent cooperation".
In the private client sector, P+P has achieved the highest score of five stars, with Reinhard Pöllath and Andreas Richter as "leading" advisors. The law firm "belongs to the absolute market leader in succession, asset and foundation consultancy", which plays the "entire range of advice for its high-net-worth clientele" in civil and tax law matters. "Quite a number of several hundred million euro family businesses", as well as HNI and UHNI with billions in assets rely on the broad-based practice" in terms of - also cross-border - issues such as inheritance tax benefits, travel and immigration tax and wealth management, "which in turn benefits from the good cooperation with the group tax lawyers and the corporate lawyers. The appointment of Maximilien Haag is another indication of the high status of this practice in the overall structure of the law firm. It is thus not surprising that, according to market insiders, P+P is considered "one of the best addresses for succession and asset management".
