Radiologist Wieland Sommer founded the digital health startup in 2014; it is a provider of software for documenting computerized tomography results. Some of the software is also currently a template for results specifically for Covid-19 patients, which Sommer is now providing at no cost. When radiologists evaluate the CT images, they can use Smart Reporting's template for results on their own computers. They are guided through the application step-by-step and receive clinical background information, reference images, common classifications and current recommendations from international radiology experts on Covid-19. In addition, radiologists no longer write the results in free-text, rather they can use pre-prepared text modules.

The template for Covid-19 patients is one of many templates developed by the founder in cooperation with medical professionals and IT experts. According to the company, more than 10,000 radiologists and pathologists in more than 90 countries worldwide use the Smart Reporting templates.
